Good debate ! The truth is:
American college (university) students don't write traditional "Queen's English" any more. This is the "daily" language they use .......I know their daddies and mommies are crying.......55555555
The Chinese students in America are always better in grammar, spelling, sentence structure.....because they are good in preparing "examinations".
Honestly, I have taught both of these students (mainly American college students in English Department 55555.....555555), you know how difficult it is 55555........because they think if they can get a B, why bother to get an A.....they can go to universities easily......they complained I am too "strict" comparing to other teachers.
This is the result of "lazy education"...........modern English.
I would suggest you to read fictions written by modern American writers. Then you know I am telling the truth.
(read "Colour Purple" or "Color Purple" to keep up with the latest trend in English.........so that you understand)
When everyone don't write traditional Queen's English -- what is wrong becomes right !
Salute to the Chinese students........
Chinese students are always right in pointing out mistakes in American students' "street English" (daily English) because they learn from "books"(probably written many years ago).....and their spelling are very good, because they "recite" dictionaries........
But Chinese students don't always understand a lot of "double" and "hidden" meanings in daily language.
I must also tell you honestly, Chinese students are not good in "comprehension" (understanding) and "usage" of daily English no matter how good their grammar, sentence structure, and spelling are.
But what can they do ? They mainly learn from books and no one speaks to them in daily English.
I am actually not writing English here. I am trying very hard to write "Chinglish" (Chinese-English) for easy communication with our friends.
55555......5555....
Right English, wrong English......any English that communicates is good English.......
Read the Chinese newspapers in places such as Guangzhou, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, US......I think it is happening to the
Chinese language too....also the students in Beijing......
Look at the May 4th movement in China - it changed classical Chinese into what we are writing today.
Our grand fathers are crying too.....55555!
It is better not to stop the trend of modernization (by simplified the language -lazy method) but to catch up with it.......otherwise, how can we make friends with our lazy students ?
Actually, I love it !!!
Do you want me to continue with daily English or traditional book English ?
